Inhalation: May irritate mucous membranes; it is extremely acrid and corrosive. Toxic; may be harmful if inhaled. Eyes: May cause burns to eyes. Skin: Produces severe inflammation of the skin with subsequent blisters and desquamation. Symptons resemble poison ivy exposure effects. Ingestion: Toxic and irritating, Cardol, a major constituent, produces severe gastroenteritis. (USCG, 1999)
Reactivity Profile
OIL, [CASHEW] contains primarily esters. Esters react with acids to liberate heat along with alcohols and acids. Strong oxidizing acids may cause a vigorous reaction that is sufficiently exothermic to ignite the reaction products. Heat is also generated by the interaction of esters with caustic solutions. Flammable hydrogen is generated by mixing esters with alkali metals and hydrides. No restrictions on aluminum, aluminum alloys, copper, copper alloys zinc, galvanized steel or alloys having more than 10 percent zinc (by weight), lead, magnesium, silver or silver alloys, or mercury (USCG, 1999).
