General Description
Liquid. Floats on water. (USCG, 1999)
Hazards
Reactivity Alerts
Air & Water Reactions
No rapid reaction with air. No rapid reaction with water.
Fire Hazard
Behavior in Fire: Heat can induce polymerization with rapid release of energy. Sealed containers may rupture explosively. (USCG, 1999)
Health Hazard
Inhalation temporarily reduces blood pressure from 5 to 25%, increases respiratory rate, decreases heart rate, and causes some EKG changes. Liquid may cause irritation of eyes and skin. May be harmful if swallowed. (USCG, 1999)
Reactivity Profile
DODECYL METHACRYLATE is an acrylate ester. Esters react with acids to liberate heat along with alcohols and acids. Strong oxidizing acids may cause a vigorous reaction that is sufficiently exothermic to ignite the reaction products. Heat is also generated by the interaction of esters with caustic solutions. Flammable hydrogen is generated by mixing esters with alkali metals and hydrides. Tends to polymerize. Oxidizing and reducing agents may initiate polymerization. Reaction may also occur when heated (USCG, 1999).
Belongs to the Following Reactive Group(s)
- Acrylates and Acrylic Acids
- Polymerizable Compounds
Potentially Incompatible Absorbents
Use caution: Liquids with this reactive group classification have been
known to react with the
absorbents
listed below.
- Cellulose-Based Absorbents
- Mineral-Based & Clay-Based Absorbents
- Dirt/Earth

First Aid
INHALATION: Move victim to fresh air. If breathing has stopped, give artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen.
EYES OR SKIN: Flush with running water for at least 15 min; hold eyelids open if neccessary. Wash skin with soap and water.
INGESTION: If victim is conscious, have victim drink milk or water and induce vomiting. If victim is unconscious or having convulsions, do nothing except keep victim warm. (USCG, 1999)
